Q&A
Do I Need a Full Class to Learn Body Sugaring?
Absolutely. A full course is essential when learning body sugaring—or anything in the esthetics industry. While social media may offer quick tips or trendy demos, it simply can’t provide the depth of knowledge or hands-on experience needed to perform this service safely and effectively.
A professional sugaring certification ensures you're learning proper technique, skin anatomy, client care, and sanitation protocols. This protects your clients and your business.
When you're fully trained, your clients will trust you more, and you'll gain the confidence to grow and thrive in a competitive market. Knowledge is power—and in this industry, it’s also your reputation.
What If My Clients Won’t Switch from Waxing to Sugaring?
It’s completely normal for clients to hesitate when it comes to trying something new—but here’s what I’ve learned from experience:
When introducing body sugaring, offer a limited-time discount during the first week or two. This small incentive lowers the barrier for curious clients to give it a try.
And here’s the truth: once they experience sugaring, they rarely go back to waxing—even at a higher price point. Why? Because sugaring is:
-
Gentler on the skin
-
Less painful
-
More effective for fine and coarse hair
-
All-natural and water-soluble
The results speak for themselves, and the comfort level is unmatched. All it takes is that first appointment to convert them for good.
What is sugaring?
Sugaring is a natural hair removal method using a paste made of sugar, water and citric acid. Unlike traiditionaly waxing, it adheres only to the ahir and dead skin cells, making it gentler and less irritating. The paste is applied against the hair growth and removed in the direction of growth for a full extraction and reducing breakage and ingrown hairs.
How Long should my hair be for sugaring?
For sugaring, the ideal length is 2-3mm (about the size of a grain of rice). If hair is too long (longer than 1/4 inch of 6mm), trimming beforehand can make the process smoother and reduce discomfort.
In some cases, we may let the paste sit on a particular area (like a hydrating mask), to allow it to seep into the follicle and coat the short hair, to try to extract the hair.
Is sugaring painful?
Everyone experiences pain differently. For first-time clients or those who have been getting waxed, sugaring can be uncomfortable. However, sugaring tends to be less painful than regular waxing because it removes hair in the direction of growth and only targets hair and dead skin cells, no live skin. Staying hydrated and exfoliating beforehand can also make the continued treatments easier. Over time, tolerance can build with continued treatments, and you can also take your choice of pain medication before appointments to help manage discomfort.
How Long does the sugaring session take?
Sugaring sessions typically last between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being treated and the amount of hair to remove. Larger areas, like legs or back may take longer, while smaller areas, like the upper lip or underarms, can be completed more quickly.
At sugar & Mila, quality always comes before speed - no appointment will ever be rushed. Each client receives the time and attention they need to achieve the best results, especially first-timers. I want you to leave the studio feeling cared for, comfortable, and confident that you received the service you paid for!.
What is the 3 week rule?
For new clients who shave or have never been sugared, this rule helps sync hair growth cycles for better results.
After your first sugaring, let your hair grow for 3 weeks.
Continue sugaring every 3 weeks for at least 2 more sessions to ensure you eventually reach the anagen phase, which is the ideal phase of removal for more long lasting or permanent results.
After at least 3 treatments, some clients may be able to extend their appointments to every 4-5 weeks.
What is the anagen phase and why does it matter?
The anagen phase is the active growth stage of the hair cycle.
During this phase, blood is still nourishing the hair, so removing hair during this stage takes longer to regrow and can weaken future hair growth, making it ideal for those looking for permanent hair reduction.
Since hair grows in cycles, consistent sugaring every 3 weeks ensures more hairs are removed in the anagen phase, leading to longer lasting smoothness.
How long do the results last?
Sugaring removes hair from the root, so results typically last 3-4 weeks. Over time, regular sugaring leads to thinner, sparser regrowth and may even reduce hair growth altogether.
Can I go back to shaving after sugaring?
You can, but it's not recommended. Shaving disrupts the hair growth cycle and makes it harder to weaken the follicles over time. To see the best results from sugaring, it's best to stick with it consistently.
Can I get sugaring done if I'm on my period?
Yes, you can! However, your skin may be more sensitive due to hormonal changes, which could make the process a bit more uncomfortable. If you're concerned about this, you may prefer to schedule your session outside of this time.
If you do choose to come in during your period, I kindly ask that you have a fresh tampon in place for sanitation and safety reasons. My treatment room is fully stocked with tampons, feminine hygiene wipes, and I encourage you to cleanse the area gently before your service.
Can I get sugaring done if I'm pregnant?
Yes, sugaring is generally safe during pregnancy. However, pregnancy can affect your skin's sensitivity due to hormonal changes, so it might be more uncomfortable than usual. Always consult with your healthcare provider to ensure it's appropriate for you, especially if you're in your first trimester or experiencing any complications.
Can I get sugaring done if I have sensitive skin?
Yes! Sugaring is hypoallergenic, free of artificial fragrances and resins, making it a great option for sensitive skin. If you're concerned about a reaction, a patch test is recommended.
Can I get sugaring done if I have eczema of psoriasis?
If you have active flare-ups, open sores, or broken skin, sugaring should be avoided in those areas. If your skin is calm, sugaring may be okay, but a patch test is recommended.
Can I get sugaring done if I'm a guy?
Yes, I offer services for both anatomies. I believe everyone should have access to this service, regardless of gender. However, I do expect respect in the studio. I do not tolerate sexual advances or inappropriate behaviour. Anyone who behaves in such a manner will be banned from my services and reported.
Does sugaring help with ingrown hairs?
Yes, sugaring can help with ingrown hairs when done with the correct technique and proper aftercare. Sugaring removes hair in the direction of growth, which reduces the risk of ingrown hairs. However, the technique needs to be correct, performed by a skilled sugarits, and aftercare and moisturising are key in preventing ingrowns and maintaining smooth skin.
Does sugaring help lighten dark spots or hyperpigmentation?
Sugaring can help with the appearance of dark spots or hyperpigmentation by gently exfoliating the skin during the hair removal process. This can encourage the shedding of dead skin cells and reveal fresher skin underneath. While sugaring is not specifically designed to treat hyperpigmentation, we offer retails products like Renew Serum that target dark spots. For more effective lightening, consider combining these products with professional treatments from a Dermatologist.
How often should I sugar after my initial treatments?
After following the 3 week rule, most clients can extend their sessions to every 4-5 weeks, depending on their hair growth. Regular sugaring will lead to longer lasting smoothness and finer regrowth.
All new clients must complete an intake form online before their first appointment. This form helps me understand your skin type, medical history, and any allergies or sensitivities to ensure a safe and effective sugaring experience. It also includes important pre and post-care guidelines.
