FAQ

Find answers to common questions about sugaring treatments, bookings, and appointments.

This FAQ page is designed to support both first-time and returning clients with everything you need to know.

We’re not medical practitioners, so we can’t advise on pain relief. What we can promise is a sugaring experience designed to minimise discomfort from start to finish.

At Sugar & Mila, we rely on expert technique, body-temperature sugar paste, and intentional pacing — not numbing or rushing — to keep the service as comfortable as possible. When paired with our pre- and post-care recommendations, most clients describe their appointment as far more relaxed than expected.

Sugaring works with the skin, not against it.

The result isn’t something you need to “push through” — it becomes a considered skin ritual focused on comfort, care, and long-term results.

Less Ouch®. More Excellence.

The short answer? Not really.

Sugaring can remove hair as short as 1/8 of an inch — about the length of a grain of rice. That means you don’t need to endure weeks of awkward regrowth just to book an appointment.

What makes sugaring different is how the paste works. The sugar is applied gently to the skin and can be left on almost like a soft mask. As it warms to body temperature, it seeps into the follicle opening, wrapping around the hair and allowing it to be removed deep from the root, even when the hair is very short.

Because sugar is water-soluble and flexible, it doesn’t stick to live skin cells. Instead, it exfoliates dead skin as it works — leaving the area smoother, calmer, and more refined after each service.

It’s hair removal and skin care in one step.

Who would’ve thought three simple ingredients could do so much with so little?

While both methods use sugar-based products, the technique and results are very different.

Sugaring is a traditional hair removal method performed using the hand-ball technique, typically with gloves. The sugar paste is:

  • Applied against the direction of hair growth
  • Removed in the natural direction of hair growth
  • Used without sticks or strips

This method gently releases the hair from the follicle, minimising breakage, irritation, and discomfort while supporting healthier skin and long-term hair reduction.

Sugar Waxing, on the other hand, uses a sugar-based product but is performed the same way as traditional waxing:

  • Applied with a spatula or cartridge
  • Removed with non-biodegradeable calico wax strips
  • Often pulled against the direction of hair growth

Although the ingredients may be similar, sugar waxing does not offer the same skin benefits, precision, or reduced irritation as true sugaring.

In short:

Sugaring is a technique, not just a product. Sugar waxing is simply waxing with a sugar-based formula.

Yes.

Sugaring is effective on all hair types and textures, for all genders.

Yes — from brows to full body.

Sugaring is especially loved for intimate and sensitive areas because it’s gentle, precise, and less traumatic to the skin.

Because hair removal shouldn’t hurt, feel rushed, or compromise your skin.

Sugar & Mila offers a modern sugaring experience built on expert technique, intention, and safe, eco-conscious formulas — thoughtfully created right here in New Zealand.

Camilla brings industry experience since 2011, with a deep foundation in professional hair removal. Sugar & Mila’s sugaring method and formulations were developed in-house in 2022 — a refined approach, built from experience, not convention.

Every detail is considered — from a calm, private setting to body-temperature sugar paste designed for sensitive skin.

Comfort isn’t an afterthought. It’s the standard.

Less Ouch®. More Excellence.

Very.

Traditional sugaring uses a single-use ball of sugar per client and sugar’s high concentration naturally inhibits bacterial growth. Clean, controlled, and skin-safe from start to finish.

Yes — for most people, significantly.

Sugaring works with the direction of hair growth, which reduces pulling, breakage, and discomfort. There’s no hot wax, no harsh resins, and far less irritation.

Absolutely.

Sugaring is made from simple, skin-loving ingredients and doesn’t stick to live skin cells. This makes it suitable for sensitive skin and areas prone to redness, irritation, or ingrowns.
